With new lineup, Teenage Fanclub opens Noise Pop – by t_lanham – February 23, 2019

When jangly Scottish outfit Teenage Fanclub opens Noise Pop festivities in The City this week, it’s technically celebrating its 30th anniversary, but not really pushing new product. But there have been a couple of noticeable lineup changes: founding bassist Gerard Love quit the group, citing the rigorous demands of constant world touring, at which point band keyboardist Dave McGowan switched to bass, paving the way for new Welsh keyboardist Euros Childs of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci renown. It was all amicable, says guitarist Raymond McGinley: “We’ve known Euros for a long time, and we always liked him, just liked hanging out with him. And when the Gerry thing happened, what we didn’t want to think was, ‘Let’s find a new Gerry.’ We didn’t want some new pastiche version of him.”

Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard recently recorded an entire cover version of your catalog classic “Bandwagonesque.” Have you heard it?

I’ve listened to some of it, but not all of it. Oddly enough, it felt sort of narcissistic to hear it all. But I heard a couple of things, and what I liked about it was that it sounded completely different to what we did. Ben did his own thing, and it’s nothing like the original record. So just see it as a massive compliment for someone to do something like that. It was really flattering, because we never take for granted, on any given day, that anyone would be that interested in what we’re doing. Most people don’t bother to tell you that they think you’re great.

Any other surprising pats on the back?

Sometimes there are strange things, like this time we were all in a bar on the Jersey shore, this beer and crab joint near our hotel. We were opening this huge tour for Weezer then, and when someone there asked what we did, we said we were touring with Weezer. And the guy goes, “Huh? Wheeze who now? Is that you?” And we said, “No, we play in this other little band called Teenage Fanclub.” And the bar got quiet, then all the guys there went, “F—– hell! We love you guys!” They all knew our music, just not what we looked like.

Is it true that you tried to convince Gerry to stay, all the way through Creation’s reissue of your back catalog last year?

For six months, we tried to explain to him that this is what we do, we have to tour. We were offered Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and then Japan, but Gerry didn’t want to do it while we did. So eventually, it was like, “Well, I guess that’s that.” We were pragmatists, once we crossed that Rubicon.
