Does posting more selfies to social media make you a narcissist?
A new study says yes.
Researchers at Swansea University in the UK and Milan University in Italy did the study. They looked at personality changes in 74 people ages 18 to 34 over a four-month period.
The people who used social media excessively, through visual postings, showed an average 25 percent increase in narcissistic traits over the four months.
Those traits were listed by Swansea as “grandiose exhibitionism, beliefs relating to entitlement, and exploiting others.”
“This increase took many of these participants above the clinical cut-off for Narcissistic Personality Disorder, according to the measurement scale used,” the university said in a press release.
People who primarily used social media for text, not photos – e.g. for Twitter – did not show an increase in narcissism.
