Man who stabbed partner 86 times jailed for 21 years after jury rejects claim ‘depression’ made him do it – The Sun

A JEWELLER who stabbed his partner 86 times in a fit of “self pity, rage and resentment” following a stint on a psychiatric ward told police: “It’s the hospital’s fault. They let me out when they knew I was depressed.”

Ian Levy, 55, who brutally murdered Elize Stevens at his flat in Hendon, north London was jailed for 21 years after an Old Bailey jury rejected his explanation and found him guilty of murder.

The court heard how police were alerted by a neighbour, who could hear the mum-of-three screaming and begging Levy to stop.

Cops found the twisted jeweller naked and covered in his partner’s blood.

The judge, Richard Foster said Levy had been motivated by a “toxic mix of rage, self pity and resentment” and attacked his partner fearing she would find someone better.

A large kitchen knife, a hammer and a pair of blood-soaked men’s tracksuit bottoms were found next to Elize’s body, punctured with 86 stab wounds.

Elize had raised her three grown-up children in Israel, but left for England in 2011 after escaping an abusive relationship.

She met Levy in 2018 and helped him to find a job at a pawnbrokers, but he quit the job at the end of January 2019 citing depression.

The following month, Levy was admitted to hospital after he told police he was going to kill himself – but was discharged after ten days with medication and placed under the care of his local mental health team.

‘TOXIC MIX OF RAGE AND SELF PITY’

Levy admitted to the brutal killing of Elize, but shockingly denied murder claiming he was suffering “anxiety, depression and an emotionally unstable personality disorder.”

But his excuse was rejected by the jury and he was jailed for 21 years.

Jailing him for life with a minimum term of 21 years, Judge Richard Foster said: “You had in Elize Stevens a person who loved you, who cared for you, who was planning to move in with you to share her life with you, a woman who had in the past suffered an abusive marriage and who saw in you a better way forward.

“She supported you, she loved you and what did you do? You took her life away so savagely and so selfishly.”

He added: “She was vulnerable and you attacked her ferociously with that knife as she pleaded for her life, saying “open the door, he’s killing me’.”

In a victim impact statement, Elize’s sister, Rochelle Dray described how the family was in a living “nightmare”.

Of her sister, she said: “You were at the prime of your life, only 50 years old.

“All you wanted was someone to love – instead of love you met with a murderer who ended your life so tragically.”

Detective Chief Inspector Noel McHugh, of Scotland Yard, paid tribute to Elize.

He said: “She was a wonderful mother and decent person, always willing to support others in need and totally selfless.

“Behind the locked door of Levy’s flat, Elize would suffer a frenzied and mindless attack for no reason.

“Levy is a cruel and sadistic man.”
