How will you spend International Women’s Day today? Will you lounge in Starbucks drinking a coffee designed in collaboration with the singer Ariana Grande, listen to a female-themed playlist and congratulate yourself on what an excellent feminist you are?
I would hope not: that is not feminism, by itself. It is leisure, and if that is all you do to support feminism, it is vanity.
Feminism has gone wrong in recent years. It has ceased to be a political movement with clear aims; it has become, rather, a brand, and a marketing tool for things that have nothing to do with feminism.
Visiting Starbucks on International Women’s Day is no more feminist than buying one of Bic’s much-mocked pink lady pens….
